Gay Marriage Part I: Mainstream and the Paradox

What is so threatening about gay marriage to social conservatives? Religious objections aside (and this isn’t to say people in ‘good faith’ don’t have them) it is because marriage is mainstream. Gay people, to this perspective, may or may not be okay in general, but they are ‘best’ when they are outsiders, oddballs. To bring them into the mainstream is to make them, well, more like everyone else. As Bob Dylan once said “Not even you can hide. You see, you’re just like me, I hope you’re satisfied.”

Jon Stewart had a great quote on this issue a couple of weeks ago. I’m sure this is not quite accurate, but to paraphrase:

“And now that gay marriage has been okayed in San Francisco, I protest, since I do not want to have to have a gay marriage!”

“Wait, I’m now being told that gay marriages will not be mandatory. So, um, what’s the big ing deal?”
