2/3 Problem

OK. You’ve got a problem. You’re trying to get 2/3 of Congress to support an amendment to the Constitution. Your first go at it was this:

“Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution or the constitution of any State, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.”

But people being what they are, they got a bit testy - the part about states not being able to legislate their own laws stuck in the craws of some conservatives - not to mention the moderates and liberals that hate the idea of the amendment altogether. A revision was in order. Here it is:

“Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.”

Boy, I’m glad they fixed that one - I was worried they wouldn’t compromise.
