DuPage County Board Candidate Blasts Technology Park Spending

Says “Good Money Thrown After Bad In An ‘Unplugged’ Technology Park”

Naperville, IL — Hiram Wurf, Democratic Candidate for DuPage County Board District 5, today questioned the priorities of Robert Schillerstrom, Chair of the DuPage County Board, and DuPage Airport Executive Director, David Bird, for wasting revenues on the DuPage County Technology Park.

DuPage Airport Executive Director, David Bird, announced yesterday that the state has sent more money to the DuPage County Technology Park, totaling almost $23.8 million of a $34 million grant.

“This money,” Wurf stated, “in addition to money from the DuPage County Board, which lent the research park $500,000 for salaries and administrative expenses in 2002, has thus far produced no tenants and has instead over the years gone to landscaping, producing signs and paying administrative expenses, begging the question ‘how much does administration of a tenantless ‘research park’ cost?’”

Robert Schillerstrom, Chair of the DuPage County Board has said that he believes the DuPage County Technology Park is a still a good investment.

“He’s wrong,” Wurf said. “No buildings, but signs. No technology businesses, but plenty of dollars spent in landscaping. The park is a ‘virtual’ technology park, with virtually nothing to show for the very real tens of millions of taxpayer dollars invested over the years. This is good money thrown after bad in an ‘unplugged’ technology park. Taxpayers should stop paying. Robert Schillerstrom and the DuPage County Board should feel free to invest their own money in the Tech Park, if they still believe it is a good investment.”
