David Corn’s suggestion that John McCain has gotten close to George Bush to knife him late in the campaign is interesting. I’m not quite sure what to think about it, since it seems that McCain has been critical of Bush all along - including on Iraq - so I don’t think it’s a change of tune. McCain asked for more troops and thought the president should speak more “directly” with the American public about Iraq a little over a year ago - and I would guess I could find earlier citations. Have I missed something? McCain’s unwieldy balancing act supporting and campaigning for the president while being critical of him has been going on for quite a while, but he hasn’t taken sides yet.
