America’s Unemployed: Visible And Looking

From yesterday’s Chicago Tribune a great example of double-speak obscuring the true nature of unemployment. The paper quotes Andrew Sum, Director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University, about the recent job fair at Soldier Field:

“So that in addition to those that are unemployed, you have this group that I call the ‘hidden unemployed.’” Sum said. “They’re not classified as unemployed. But if you ask them, ‘Do you want a job?’ they’ll say, ‘Yes, I’d like to work, but I’m no longer looking.’ And whenever you do a job fair you’ll get a fair number of those who will show up.”

Huh?

That’s what happens when words like “unemployed” get defined by people in Washington who are more interested in words like “employed.” I can’t help you with the redefinition of “looking for work.”
