The Politics of Numbers In The Greenspan-Mitchell Household

Apparently reporter Andrea Mitchell who is married to Alan Greenspan has the same solid grounding in statistics as he does. For example, Greenspan recently noted Social Security is in danger - remember when he fixed Social Security? Ah, well, as the Maestro might say, one must be conservative with numbers.

Iraq Political Humor

For some reason this joke in today’s New York Times made me laugh:
“I hear the war for Iraq has cost us $200 billion,” said Matt Bellace, caught at Caroline’s on Broadway. “Did anyone think of just buying Iraq?”
It’s dark humor with a core of truth.
On reflection, I guess Colin Powell suggested something like this, when […]

America’s Unemployed: Visible And Looking

From yesterday’s Chicago Tribune a great example of double-speak obscuring the true nature of unemployment. The paper quotes Andrew Sum, Director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University, about the recent job fair at Soldier Field:
“So that in addition to those that are unemployed, you have this group that I call […]

David Corn: Et Tu John McCain?

David Corn’s suggestion that John McCain has gotten close to George Bush to knife him late in the campaign is interesting. I’m not quite sure what to think about it, since it seems that McCain has been critical of Bush all along - including on Iraq - so I don’t think it’s a change […]

Jakob Nielsen Tells Presidential Candidates How Usable Voters Find Their Email Newsletters

Jakob Nielsen, web usability guru, brings his perspective to George Bush and John Kerry’s email newsletters in Nielsen’s latest Alertbox entry. Neither candidate does well, but Bush edges out Kerry overall in Nielsen’s estimation.
It’s interesting what Nielsen’s findings broadly say about the spirit of the email campaigns to what are admittedly likely supporters. […]

Mythical Swing Voters And The Presidential Election

A lot has been written about the “swing voters” this election. I discount a lot of it. It is really hard to imagine people that have been following events and are truly “undecided” in a way that future events could change. What do I mean by this?
I think most undecided voters are […]

Naperville’s Shuttle Service Called Success

The Naperville Sun is reporting that this weekend’s shuttle service from three neighborhoods to downtown Naperville was viewed as a success. It is my hope that they expand this service, both in the sections of the community served (i.e. service area) and in duration as part of a comprehensive bus transportation system throughout Naperville […]

Blog Evidence of DuPage Mass Transit Confusion

Every once in a while you get a “sign” you’re on the right track. Here’s what somebody searched for on AOL’s search engine today: “what+metra+would+i+take+around+Jefferson+park+to+get++to+Elmhurst”
The sad thing is that I know this because my blog is on page two of the “relevant” searches for AOL - and they clicked on it hoping I would […]
