Response to John Buell’s Letter In Daily Herald

John Buell of Naperville, who I’ve never met, recently wrote a letter to the Daily Herald in support of my opponent. Below is the response I sent to the Daily Herald.

To Fence Post:

John Buell of Naperville recently wrote a letter supporting my opponent for DuPage County Board. He said he agrees with my opponent’s every public position and vote, and finds my criticism partisan.

Were Buell to ask the Daily Herald, the Chicago Tribune that endorsed my candidacy, or any newspaper about any interview with me, or were he to visit my website, www.WurfWhile.com, he would find I support every criticism I make with specific examples.

What is an example where I differ strongly with my opponent? In 2003 the Board voted on a non-agenda item, meaning it was not announced in advance, unanimously supporting O’Hare Expansion. This reversed their long-standing position against expansion. The effect of the vote was to deny DuPage Bensenville residents a chance to confront elected officials about a proposal that will destroy their homes, businesses and community. Whether you agree or disagree with O’Hare Expansion, what the Board unanimously did was immoral, found illegal in court (violating the Open Meetings Act) and wrong for DuPage. To say that people in DuPage threatened by the Board with the loss of their homes, businesses and community should be denied the right to voice objections and concerns to the Board is reprehensible. What purpose does the Board have if it will not protect your home, business and community?

I wish my opponent had been a strong voice for open government, demanding the listing of O’Hare Expansion on the agenda before voting, as legally required. I wish he had been a strong voice for the right of DuPage citizens to speak. I wish he had confronted the Board on this issue – going public about the injustice, if private persuasion failed. I will act differently. I will be the voice to protect homes, businesses and communities in DuPage. I think it is a critical difference. It is not an issue of political party.
