My grandfather was a devout Red Sox fan his whole life, never living to witness them win a World Series again (he was a very young boy when they last did it). I became a fan over the many summers I spent in Maine with him watching players like Yaz, Dwight Evans, Jim Rice, Bill Buckner, Wade Boggs, Oil Can, Hurst and Clemens.
Last night I missed the game, but I did my part. When things were not going well in a game my grandfather would yell at the players on TV calling them “bums” (it never got more colorful than that) and would often turn the TV off in disgust during losing games. While there’s no scientific basis for it, it seemed like the Red Sox played better with the shouting and eventual turning off of the TV - they actually pulled off a number of those games to win. I like to think my grandfather turned around a lot of games that way - it was a joke of sorts in the family. My expectation in this series was that the Red Sox, in ways only they could find, would go up three games and then get swept. They were the masters of the dramatic loss. So last night I didn’t watch, having to attend the DuPage Get Out The Vote Rally with Barack Obama, and then continue spreading my political message to DuPage. I like to think, in my own way, that I helped the Sox by not watching.
DuPage Democrats have had a long drought too. If the Red Sox, of all teams, can do it, certainly we can too.
To all those (long suffering) Red Sox fans, congratulations, it’s been a long drought - and they finally did it! To all the DuPage Democrats, five more days of hard work and we will make this our year too!
