Wurf On Medical Malpractice In Naperville Sun

The Naperville Sun cites me today in a discussion of the medical malpractice insurance crisis.

“District 5 County Board member Robert Schroeder, R-Naperville, supports a [medical malpractice lawsuit damage] cap, but he wants it higher than the levels now being discussed. Democratic challenger Hiram Wurf said that position ignores the basic issue - the factors contributing to the high cost of health care.

Wurf writes in his online blog that ‘health care is a right, and decent societies provide it.’ If more money were directed into research, he said, fewer medical errors would be made, lawsuits would decrease and premiums would go down - or be capped by lawmakers.

‘That sounds like common sense, but if you look at (Republican proposals), that’s not something that they address,’ he said.”

You can read a more complete description of my views here, and you can read a short description of things that I think are moving us in the right direction here.

Medical malpractice reform is a serious issue, with serious consequences. It’s long past time that both parties join together and address it seriously.
