Democrat Criticizes Schillerstrom and DuPage County Board For Abandoning Efficiency and Technology

Schillerstrom Says “Needs wax and wane for issue-focused committees such as the Technology Committee and the Government Efficiency Committee.”

Wurf Says “DuPage County Board thinking about efficiency is obsolete - just like their approach to technology. They need to try harder. Taxpayers always deserve efficient, modern government - that is the issue.”

Naperville, IL — Hiram Wurf, a recent Democratic Candidate for DuPage County Board District 5 who is exploring a future bid, criticized DuPage County Board Chairman Robert Schillerstrom and the Board for eliminating the Government Efficiency Committee yesterday and failing to have an effective Technology Committee.

“The Chair and Board just don’t get it,” said Wurf. “They have gotten rid of the Government Efficiency Committee because, they say, it is no longer needed. Shouldn’t some group always look at making DuPage County government more efficient? With increases in sales taxes being proposed and service cuts possible, shouldn’t someone focus on greater government efficiency? Why isn’t there an Efficiency committee that anticipates ways to cut costs instead of reacting to problems or waiting until it’s painfully obvious?”

Wurf also criticized the Technology Committee that he said lacked power, engaged leadership and results.

“DuPage is a cosmopolitan county with many technology industry professionals,” Wurf said. “Yet, on the County Board website we still see the Fall 2003 newsletter listed as the current newsletter, five months after I publicly announced the outdated newsletter on my website. It’s approaching a year-and-a-half since that newsletter was produced. Has nothing happened since then?”

Wurf continued, “As bad a eliminating the Efficiency Committee is - they also want to get rid of the Technology Committee, instead of making it functional. Currently the Technology Committee’s power is advisory and, as demonstrated by the Fall 2003 newsletter, almost completely ineffective. Five months ago I made a standing offer that if the County Board couldn’t put public meeting minutes, voting results and voting records on their own site, I would put them on my website by the next day for free. I haven’t heard anything about it since, and no one is reading the minutes online because they still aren’t there. Meanwhile the Technology Committee is led by Chairman James Healy, who has proposed getting rid of the committee. No power, no interest, no results. In the end DuPage taxpayers suffer because the County Board’s approach is ineffective and obsolete.”

“DuPage voters are smart enough to know that government should strive for greater efficiency and keep up with modern technology and modern expectations,” Wurf concluded. “While the current Chair and DuPage County Board do not see the need for keeping up with either government efficiency or technology, DuPage residents and voters see it differently. Robert Schillerstrom and the DuPage County Board are out of touch with voters and their governing is obsolete.”
