Big Overdue Thanks To Aaron Swartz And Hoping A Fix Comes Soon For NY Times Link Generator

I owe a big thanks to Aaron Swartz (and his Mom). I’ve never met him - and couldn’t have told you who he was until yesterday - when I looked him up and gave a call to his home because the New York Times Link Generator was still down (it’s normally here and “future-proofs” links to New York Times articles).

Sometimes you don’t know how much you depend on something until it’s under threat or gone (reminds me a bit of Social Security).

Anyway, after what seems like a week or more of not getting through to the site, and worried it was the New York Times removing it, I looked up the site owner and made the call yesterday afternoon, leaving a message. Last night I got a call back voicemail from Aaron’s Mom who said his server, far from just crashing had “fried” and that Aaron would probably restore it from an old backup when he could (he’s off at college now).

Aaron’s done a tremendous amount for this blog (and I’m guessing blogging in general) with the site and we all owe him a lot of gratitude. Here’s hoping that he can recreate the site soon!
