Capitol Fax Asks About Primary Challenger To Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich - It Gets A Lot of Discussion

Over at Rich Miller’s Capitol Fax is a question about who would be a good primary challenger to Rod Blagojevich. The interest and number of responses doesn’t bode well for Rod. Neither does the talk about Paul Vallas, which is likely a pipe dream because of residency alone (despite getting some play of late). And the preoccupation with an alternate to Governor Rod Blagojevich on the Democratic ticket is not just coming from people in Illinois. There was also discussion at DailyKos about this recently, “Gov. Blagojevich: 06’s Most Endangered Democrat,” with a lot of out-of-staters speculating.

Rod needs to start finding ways, despite the state’s finances (which were horrible when he came in), of delivering for the people (not just some people). His rigidity on no sales and income taxes is a good political ploy - but not if the rest of his house is falling in around him. At a certain point people see loss of service and increase in fees as a problem - and for Democrats the regressiveness of that change in government funding is not endearing either. If Blagojevich can’t get it together soon, he risks being left out in 2006. His best hope may be a weak GOP challenger - and while it’s a hope, it’s not one I’d want to have to bank on.
