According to the Chicago Sun-Times (from the AP) Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has said, “If someone said, well, you know, the governor’s testing the national waters [to run for president], that’s a fair characterization.” Romney also said he plans to run for re-election as governor and will make a final decision this fall. Romney would be the first Mormon president should he go all the way to the White House.
Romney has long been thought to be eyeing the White House, and his mix of conservative stands (pro-life, except when he needs to be pro-choice, anti-stem cell research on embryos and defining life as beginning at conception) combined with an appearance of moderation on issues like gun control, may work for him. But whatever he might do in a general election (where Massachussets would be a great prize for the GOP and his former state of Utah is likely in the bag because of religion), Mitt needs to get past the GOP primary. I suspect he can’t do it - but we may get a chance to see.
