I’ve written about the Medicare Drug “Plan” before - and am revisiting it because Disarranging Mine’s post reminded me of the horror visiting seniors this month in the mail. The plan is all the more horrible for the hope it instills in seniors that it can help them (which it can, to varying degrees, if they can figure it out).
From Disarranging Mine:
“So far, this is what I think I know. So far. I think.
- Anyone who is on Medicare is eligible for the new Medicare prescription drug benefit.
- Medicare is going to start sending out official information sometime in October.
- To qualify for the year 2006, the sign-up period starts November 15, and ends December 31/2005.
Things start to get fuzzy when deciding which plan to sign up for. There are many factors to consider…. My head is spinning.”
Disarranging Mine points you to the Consumer Union tips on Medicare drug plans, which are worth a read (for everyone). In the end, I fear, you’ll realize that this law was never designed to do much more than cover political backsides, stall against real reform and real coverage and, of course, paralyze people in need, with limited resources, who will look at this information in hopeless confusion and not access the benefits that are rightful theirs. Oh, and did I mention it functions as a subsidy for the drug industry too?
Shameful and criminal.
