Potential GOP Candidate Judy Baar Topinka will run for governor if the national party promises to deliver the funds to her should she win the Republican primary. Judy’s supposedly looking for $4-5 million. You can’t blame her, looking at Governor Rod Blagojevich’s $14 million, and it’s a measure of where the national GOP holds Illinois that it won’t fund candidates here. Illinois still remembers the U.S. Senate fiasco featuring Republican Alan Keyes.
While Governor Blagojevich has had plenty of “difficulties” to deal with recently, his campaign coffers are too extensive for most contenders to make a reasonable go of it. There’s reason to think State Treasurer Topinka, the only Republican statewide office holder, would not beat Blagojevich even with the national money. Nonetheless, in the land of Lincoln, Judy Baar Topinka may have been the “last, best hope” for the Republican Party in the 2006 general election for governor.
