Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Candidate Debra Shore Makes Cover Of The Chicago Reader

[Hat tip to Sandra Verthein.] Congratulations to Debra Shore and her campaign for Debra making the cover of the Chicago Reader (pdf of story here)!

The story begins:

“Candidates for commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District usually don’t have Web sites, don’t march in the Gay Pride Parade, and don’t receive endorsements from Democracy for America meetups. The board of commissioners is typically filled by Democratic organization veterans and longtime district employees, and campaigning typically means buttering up the committeemen who do the slating, passing out yard signs, and hoping your name comes first on the ballot. But Debra Shore isn’t typical. A 53-year-old conservationist, she’s the Howard Dean of this year’s race….”

I first met Debra during the Dean campaign and have stayed in touch since. Debra’s good government and environmentalist background is exactly what we need to protect our Lake Michigan water supply. I recently endorsed Debra - and here’s part of what I said:

“I’m supporting Debra Shore in her campaign for commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD), the Cook County body that maintains and protects our water supply and the public lands surrounding it. Debra could use all of our help - which is why I’m asking you to register your support.
….
Debra Shore is uniquely qualified to be commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District - and we should all care about that because drinking water scarcity is one of the major political issues in the coming years. Our quality of life will depend on the conservation of Lake Michigan water for Cook, DuPage and surrounding counties. Debra spent eight years working as an Investigator with Better Government Association, winning the Jacob Sher Award for Investigative Reporting for an investigation of city construction contracts that led to ethics regulations revision for city employees. She has since worked eight years in the local environmental movement, founding Chicago Wilderness Magazine, the magazine of a consortium of over 180 public and private organizations. She brings her good government and environmental credentials to a job overseeing a $700 million budget where there is not a single environmentalist on the current board.

Support good government and the environmental conservation of one of our most precious natural resources - water! Support Debra Shore!”
