Hi Gary,

Thanks for the comment!

I agree that the paying is notable, however, I'm not sure that in what I wrote it was relevant. Please don't take what I wrote as a slam against activism - it isn't. It does, however, suggest that political campaigns need to realize that there is no substitute for local people going out there on their behalf and being active not just during the campaign, but before and after. In that regard both Cegelis and Scott seem to have substantially better community roots (I think this is the consensus view - and I tend to agree with it).

As for your particular point - I can only say a similar truthful charge was leveled against John Kerry in Iowa during the 2004 presidential primary - and it was trumpeted by the Dean campaign (in which I was heavily involved - including spending some time in Iowa). We know what happened there. It suggests that devoted political activists are not necessarily any better than hired ones - but I believe people who are from and involved in the community are likely better than both of the others. It's another Dean campaign lesson for me.

I think it should be noted that Duckworth's handlers have reportedly been trying to recruit precinct workers at UIUC for election day by offering $10/hour. This is in sharp contrast to Cegelis, who will have over a hundred volunteers working for her because they believe in her as a candidate.
