Last week the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) endorsed Democratic Candidate Bill Reedy in the 13th Congressional race. The Machinists have also invited Reedy to speak at the Illinois State Council of Machinists, in Springfield on Wednesday, March 22 to kick off his General Election campaign against Republican incumbent Judy Biggert.
James E. Brown, General Vice President of the IAM, noted Mr. Reedy’s commitment to the Association’s legislative issues as the primary factors in the Union’s decision to support his campaign. Key priorities include:
- Fair trade agreements that address the fundamental rights of all human beings as well as workers’ rights;
- Livable wages, not simply minimum wages, for every American who wants to work;
- Occupational safety and health standards that ensure the protection of working men and women rather than maximizing profits at the expense of human capital;
- Access to quality, affordable health care for every American; and
- Protecting and strengthening Social Security and Medicare
Locally IAM has been endorsing Democratic candidates who have strong progressive credentials, including Congressional Candidate Christine Cegelis in the 6th District.
IAM joins a list of Reedy endorsements including, The Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times, the Daily Herald, Veterans for Progress, Independent Voters of Illinois-Independent Precinct Organization, the National Organization for Women, Illinois Committee for Honest Government, Americans for Democratic Action, Democracy for Illinois, Progressive Democrats of Illinois and others.
