The AP and Indianapolis Star are reporting that Evan Bayh has sent 25 staffers to Iowa to help staff races there and build goodwill for Evan Bayh’ anticipated presidential run for 2008. That number represents half of the “cream of the crop” of staffers being trained by Bayh’s All America PAC which held its third and most intensive training this past week. It is “the largest deployment so far of any politician testing the presidential waters” according to the AP. Bayh’s PAC also plans to send staffers to New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. He will also target three competitive Indiana congressional races.

Starting early makes sense for Bayh, a conservative former head of the DLC and founder of the New Democrat Coalition who must find a way to distinguish himself in a crowded field with red state competitors like former Virginia Governor Marc Warner, who is likely fighting for the same supporters, and mega fundraiser, presumed front runner and fellow DLCer Hillary Clinton. Bayh has tried to get trendy and in touch via social networking site Facebook and photo site Flickr and seems to be doing a lot of smart things. That said, while anything’s possible this early, I just don’t see it in 2008.
