George Allen And John McCain? Time To Look At The GOP Presidential Bench In 2008?

I already thought Virginia Republican Senator George Allen was likely to be dead in the water for the presidential election in 2008 because of his background. I also thought that Arizona Republican Senator John McCain was making a mistake in calculating that embracing President George W. Bush and running further to the right was going to gain him the presidency in 2008.

McCain making monkey jokes, in a campaign appearance with Allen to a half-empty room, following Allen’s racially offensive monkey joke to an American of Indian (South Asian) descent suggests that neither one of them is going to make it - and they’re supposedly among the top GOP presidential prospects for 2008.

[Moveon.org is trying to get the Republican National Committee to withdraw its support from Senator Allen over the incident, saying “[t]his kind of bigotry has no place in America” (you can sign there petition here)]

Suddenly that Republican apostate on abortion and gay rights, Rudy Giuliani, who has had marriage troubles doesn’t look so bad. Heck, even former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, who is no slouch on marriage screw-ups himself, may have a shot.
