Bush To Phrase Phase-Out - Can A Mute Presidency Be Far Behind?

Today’s New York Times reports that President George W. Bush will no longer use the phrase “stay the course” referring to Iraq. Some have speculated this new turn of events heralds more phrase phase-outs in the future, leading to an increasingly mute presidency. While some have referred to a new “gesticulating presidency,” close observers of the White House do not believe that the president will be able to pick up sign language any time soon. This potential communication problem, White House sources said speaking on background, will likely be alleviated by Vice President Dick Cheney, who has been studying President Bush’s gestures for over six years now and tells close associates he “knows what the president is saying - often before he even says it.”

The secret service has advised that due to the risks of both the president and vice president being seen publicly in the same place, most of this future presidential communication is likely to occur in an undisclosed location. The Vice President’s Office did not respond to calls seeking comment.
