From today’s New York Times article “Democrats Critical of New Medicare Guide” the last paragraph of a story that is a major story itself:
“Under federal law, the secretary of health and human services is to disseminate information comparing the performance of private plans under Medicare. But Consumers Union pointed out that this information was missing for more than half of the plans listed in the 2007 handbook. Federal officials said some of the data would be made available on the Internet.”
You can read the Consumer Union press release and data here.
You might want to read the New York Times paragraph I’ve quoted above twice. Apparently the majority of private plans lack the information the federal government says should be in the 2007 handbook, a comparison of the private plan to the federal plan, and the “fix” is that only “some of the data” will be made available online. That means some of the information will never be available - and you can’t really compare all of the plans. Why isn’t this last paragraph, a story of the Bush Administration’s continued Medicare destruction and deception to the detriment of all Americans, its own front page story? And why isn’t the original story on the front page?
