FEMA Has Discovered Novel Way Of Reducing Surplus Mobile Homes - Let Them Disintegrate

Remember the criticism of the Federal Emergency Management Agency buying mobile homes and not using over 20,000 of them (about $750 million worth)? That’s costing U.S. taxpayers about $250,000 a month in storage - not to mention the $6 million or so spent on gravel to keep the trailers from sinking in the mud.

Well FEMA has found a fix. The solution? Let the weather wreck the mobile housing (pdf). So far it’s destroyed as much as $5 million worth of housing according to one report. Only about $745 million or so to go….

I remember a time before George W. Bush’s Administration when housing was used to, well, provide shelter for people. Funny how out of date that notion has become. Went out the window with the Federal Emergency Management Agency actually helping people in emergencies.
