Rolling Stone puts a lot of it together here. Recent John Kerry reject for 2004 VP, Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack has become the first Democrat to formally begin a run for president. As a favorite son of Iowa, he effectively makes Iowa’s first in the nation caucus politically pointless. This has a few effects, devastating presidential aspirant John Edwards’ organization in Iowa, where he leads in polls, and presumably also hurting both Barack Obama and to a greater extent Evan Bayh, two Midwestern Democrats whose campaigns would likely benefit from close proximity to Iowa.
This also lets Hillary Clinton focus the newly prominent Nevada caucus, and then New Hampshire and South Carolina. It still isn’t smooth sailing for Clinton against Edwards (or Obama if he jumps in), but taking away one big obstacle can only help.
