Bob Peickert’s Letter to the Editor appeared in Friday’s Naperville Sun:
“As county budget problems mount, (DuPage County Board Chairman) Bob Schillerstrom needs to step forward and take responsibility and demonstrate that he was elected to serve the taxpayers, not the Republican Party.
County Board salaries and benefits continue to grow while services decline. With a $40 million budget deficit looming, the board and Schillerstrom took care of each other before the news hit the papers by voting themselves another 10-percent pay raise on top of a 75-percent pay raise they gave themselves during the past 8 years.
Add to that first class health insurance benefits, liberal expense accounts and pensions for a part-time job. Eighteen board seats filled by those loyal to Schillerstrom and the Republican Party. We need elected officials who are loyal to the taxpayers.
Bob Schillerstrom should come out and say that the salaries are too high (his is over $100,000) and the benefits too costly to the taxpayers for a part-time job. Certainly 12 seats are sufficient to do the job that requires going to two meetings a month.
When is the last time you saw a board member in your community? Giving up a $3,000 stipend and keeping $67,000 in pay and benefits is a start - a slow start.”
