No, they don't "have more political clout as illegals" - but "legalizing" the disenfranchisement of illegal workers makes matters worse, not better.  It means as a matter of policy and principle the United States believes people living and working here, in large numbers, and over long periods of time should be denied political rights.  That goes against the grain of democracy and creates a legalized, large underclass that will be (officially) exploited.</description>

And  they have more political clout as illegals?  I think a good chunk of illegal immigrants would prefer not to stay in the first place.  A guest worker program would seem perfect for them.  They don't want to be immigrants.  They want to be guests, make their dough, and go home.</description>
