Hastert In 14th To Announce In Or Out Next Week Reports Congress Daily

National Journal’s Congress Daily (subscription required) reports that Congressman Dennis Hastert will announce next week if he is running for re-election.

Republicans that have lined up to run if Hastert retires include North Aurora businessman Jim Oberweis, who says he will spend as much as $2.5 million in the primary and the same in the general election, Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns, considered a moderate in the race, and conservative Aurora State Senator Chris Lauzen, who already represent 250,000 residents in the 14th congressional district. Other Republicans considered the spot and decided against it including State House Minority Leader Tom Cross and Batavia State Representative Tim Schmitz. Hastert’s spokesman provided a window of time about three months ago, saying the congressman would make a decision on running within the time period, and he’s at the end of it.

Democrats already actively campaigning in the primary include Geneva attorney Jotham Stein, Geneva scientist and businessman Bill Foster and last year’s Democratic nominee from Yorkville John Laesch. The Democrats see real opportunity in the 14th congressional race - with or without Dennis running.
