Update On Vern DelJonson, Democratic Candidate In 14th Congressional Race

14th Congressional Candidate Vernon DelJonson emailed me - so I have an update. First off he now lives in DeKalb. Secondly, he has a website with more information.

You can get some great background info from Mike Cetera at the Beacon Blog who credits Vern with “the best quote of my career”

“When asked in 2000 why DelJonson, the Democratic nominee, was taking on then House Speaker Dennis Hastert and the national Republican Party, he said: ‘You take out the most secure seat, you’re going to scare the crap out of the rest of them. I’m trying to get the whores out of Congress.’”

It is a great quote - and certainly not one, phrased that way, that you’re likely to hear from too many candidates.

There’s no doubt that coming in late, likely with little money, and taking a libertarian stand on legalizing marijuana among other things are huge barriers to win - but hey, sorting out the strongest candidate is what primaries are all about. Assuming that DelJonson is able to get his petitions in, the Democratic primary will likely feature four candidates: Vern DelJonson of DeKalb; attorney Jotham Stein of Geneva; businessman/scientist Bill Foster also of Geneva; and carpenter and last cycle’s nominee John Laesch of Yorkville. It’s fair to say that few would have ever dreamed about four Democratic primary contenders in the 14th district - not to mention having another serious contender deciding not to run (State Representative Linda Chapa LaVia). Wow!
