In Bill Richardson’s new ad airing in Iowa since Tuesday we see Bill facing us, a road on his right and a fence on his left. Bill goes to the fence, leans on it and makes his pitch. He doesn’t have every answer, but he won’t mislead us. He will get the troops out of Iraq, get rid of “No Child Left Behind,” reverse global warming and provide health insurance for every American. The message is clear - he’s an honest broker that will deal with the most pressing issues Americans face. The subtext, the fence he leans against, speaks of security - and seemingly addresses immigration without speaking about it - Richardson accomplishes things “not by dividing people, but by earning their trust.” The picturesque winding dirt road at Bill’s right, disappearing in the distance, speaks to the path he will lead us on (it’s faded and impressionistic). It’s a great message - and great imagery. Take a look for yourself.
