Marni Pyke reports in today’s Daily Herald that the DuPage County Board is giving serious consideration to a $50 DuPage vehicle sticker and a quarter-cent sales tax. The vehicle sticker is one of the few revenue raising options the county board has, without voter or Springfield approval, and they project it to raise $25 million. The board envisions the sales tax as a referendum for voters February 5, 2008 which, if passed, would negate the need for the vehicle sticker (that they plan to eliminate before it goes into effect). The board estimates $40 million in revenue from the sales tax.
The article doesn’t address what the board will do with its $50 million budget gap - which the “either/or” tax proposal at best cuts to $10 million. I’ve suggested elsewhere that I see an increasing move to regressive fee-based government, which may be what board Finance Committee Chairman Pat O’Shea has in mind when he suggested he might find a non-tax, non-staff cutting solutions that plans to offer on Tuesday.
The article also mentions that DuPage State’s Attorney Joseph Birkett is organizing a budget cut protest rally at noon on Tuesday in front of county headquarters.
