There have been a lot of words today, a lot of hyperbole and, thankfully, some heartfelt well wishes to America’s veterans. I’ll keep this brief - if you’re serious about honoring the sacrifice of Americans in our military, you can start by making sure that they all have access to quality health care and educational opportunities through a new G.I. Bill. The VA health care system should be open to all of them, without the delays and waitlisting based on income and health needs. There should be a “new” G.I. Bill for veterans along the lines of WWII - as Senators Jim Webb and Chuck Hagel have proposed - instead of the ‘insufficient to pay for college’ benefit that exists today. Talk and praise are wonderful, and cheap, but our veterans deserve better.
