Aurora Beacon News Endorses Democrat Bill Foster In IL-14

From the Beacon News Editorial Board:

“It’s quite possible this newspaper has never before backed a Democrat in a 14th Congressional District general election. Given the traditional voting history of the district and former Speaker Dennis Hastert’s popularity and political success over the past two decades, the Democratic Party just hasn’t provided candidates who would best represent and benefit the residents living here.

That changes today with our endorsement of Bill Foster in the March 8 special election.

It’s not that we’re abandoning our roots by passing over Republican Jim Oberweis, Hastert’s chosen successor. Quite the opposite. In Foster we see the same quiet leadership and consensus-building style that first made Hastert such a valuable member of Congress. We see in Foster the potential for accomplishment through consensus and a willingness to reach across the aisle to tackle challenges we face as a district and nation.”

As for Jim Oberweis, the Beacon News was kind to him this time - check out what the Beacon News said the last time Oberweis ran for office in 2006 - when they explicitly rejected him.

Love to say I am surprised, but I am not. Considering they in any contested local race over the last few year they have supported the Democrat. Be it Holmes over Wintermute, LaVia over everyone, Weisner over Irvin, etc. It’s nice they try and act like they endorse mostly Republicans….

From the Daily Herald (who covers more the the 14th BTW)

Our nod goes to Oberweis because he could explain and support his views far better than did Foster, and because his views seem more aligned with this longtime Republican district.

    DEAR READERS-

DON’T KNOW ABOUT THAT. A “FLIP FLOPPER ” ON ILLEGALS IS HARDLY A GOOD CANDIDATE TO VOTE ON! I THINK A REPUBLICAN EXCUSE FOR RUNNING ONCE AGAIN, UN- ELECTABLE CANDIDATES!

    TOO BE FAIR-

RUNNING A CANDIDATE WHO SAID ” NOTHING CAN’T BE FIXED BY THROWING MONEY AT IT” IS NOT TOO GOOD EITHER. THEN HE TRIED TO PASS OFF AS A BLUE DOG AFTER THE FACT. (NOT REAL.)

    Hi Robert,

Unfortunately you bought into the untruths by Jim Oberweis that the Chicago Tribune pointed out in their endorsement of Bill Foster:

“Oberweis’ TV and radio ads quote Foster saying, ‘There’s nothing in life that you can’t improve by pouring money at it. …’

Foster did say that, at a League of Women Voters debate. But the transcript makes it clear he was talking about the federal government’s ‘poor efforts’ to improve air-traffic-control safety. His conclusion: ‘This is one example of a place I would look to save taxpayer dollars.’

And Oberweis’ immediate response at the debate? He said: ‘I find myself in the almost embarrassing position of tending to agree with Bill on some of his comments there.’”

So in other words Jim Oberweis agreed with the quote because in context it didn’t mean what it seems to mean out of context. Oberweis trumpeting that portion of the quote is completely dishonest as the Tribune clearly points out.
