Harper, Veterans condemn Biggert’s vote against GI Bill, announce launch of petition campaign

Romeoville – Scott Harper, the Democratic candidate for Congress in the IL-13, today condemned Judy Biggert’s vote on last week’s GI Bill, which would have expanded financial aid to veterans and made college more affordable.

‘Judy Biggert’s vote against the GI Bill is outrageous,’ said Harper. ‘Time and again, she has been on the wrong side of these important issues and her vote on this recent legislation is a failure of leadership.’

In addition to her vote on the GI Bill, Harper also criticized Biggert for numerous other votes against veterans, including in 2007, when she came out against a budget that would have increased funding for veterans’ health care by $6.7 billion. She also voted against expanding TRICARE to provide health benefits for National Guard members and reservists, and she voted down the Webb Amendment to increase time off between combat tours overseas.

‘Congresswoman Biggert has shortchanged our veterans,’ said Harper. ‘As we come together to celebrate Memorial Day and honor our fallen soldiers, we must also keep faith with the ones returning home. Unfortunately, Judy Biggert has let them down.’

Joining Harper at the press conference were veterans from throughout the 13th Congressional District including Dirk Enger, who fought in Operation Desert Storm, Jack Picciolo, a Vietnam Veteran and Paul Sjordal, a Lt. Col. in the Air Force.

Enger, who has been a community leader fighting for veterans said, ‘It is appalling that Congresswoman Biggert would vote against the GI Bill. Veterans sacrifice so much for this country and they deserve better. We need a Congress and a Nation that will fulfill its obligation to our veterans, now more than ever. Our veterans have fulfilled their obligation.’

Added Sjordal, ‘Supporting our veterans is more than just a bumper-sticker slogan or political campaign rhetoric. When the votes are cast in Washington, Congresswoman Biggert is too often on the wrong side of the issue. And that’s why we need to fight for change and send Scott Harper to Congress.’”
