Water Shortages Possible For Northeast Illinois In Coming Decades

[Hat tip Progress Illinois]

Yesterday preceding a discussion of universal health care I wrote, “one of the things to keep an eye on in the coming year(s) are advocacy movements seeking major policy changes in areas of obvious national neglect like health care, the environment, energy, water rights/distribution, etc.” As if on cue Crain’s reports today on a Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning study, “Regional Water Demand Scenarios for Northeastern Illinois: 2005-2050, Project Completion Report,” that projects water usage in 2050 for the 11 Northeastern Illinois counties. The “worst-case scenario” shows water use increases of up to 64% from current levels, creating shortages. The report also looks at pricing as a way of controlling water usage.

Water usage is going to be a huge issue going forward - and not just in Northeastern Illinois.
