........WE NEED TO REBUILD THE ECONOMY BY ENDING NAFTA, INCENTIVES TO HAVE COMPANIES HERE, AND PERHAPES PRICE CONTROLS TO SLOW DOWN THIS RECESSION.

AS FOR ME, I LIVED IN THE THIRD CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT FOR MOST OF MY LIFE. THERE, THE HABIT AT THIS TIME WAS A REPUBLICAN FOR PRES. AND A DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSMAN (BILL LIPINSKI) FOR EXAMPLE. NOW HIS SON DAN WHO IS DOING A GOOD JOB.

DEAR READERS AND MR. CONE-

FIRST, HIRAM IS DOING A FINE JOB WITH THIS PAGE. HE LET EVERYONE HAVE A SAY ON THE MATTERS AND THAT IS GOOD. UNLIKE OTHERS WHO WILL "DROP YOU" FOR DIFFERANT OF OPINIONS, BUT THAT IS THEIR PROBELMS. JOE LIBERMAN. HE FOUGHT AND STAYED IN NOW A INDEPENDENT DEMOCRAT. I RESPECT THAT.

IN SHORT MR CONE, OBAMA HAS THE REV. WRIGHT PROBLEM ON HIS SHOULDERS. HOW CAN A PERSON WHO GOSE TO A CHURCH FOR 20 YEAR NOT LET THIS STUFF RUB OFF ON HE AND HIS WIFE?? HE MAY GET A PASS NOW BY THE PRESS, BUT IF HE GET THE NOMINATION, HE WILL LOSE. THEY WILL USE THIS, HIS WIFES COMMENTS, AND HOW HE IS ALSO UN-AMERICAN BACKED BY HIS OWN COMMENTS.

HE CALLS FOR "CHANGE" BUT HAS NO REAL IDEAS AT HAND. HE IS ALSO VERY COCKY. THIS TURNS PEOPLE OFF. WE NEED A PERSON WITH EXPERIENCE NOW. NOT A TRAINEE.

HE KNOWS WE CAN'T JUST LEAVE THIS WAR ON TERROR. WE WILL LOOK NOT CREDITABLE TO THE WORLD AND THEY (THE TERRORISTS)WILL COME HERE. HOW ABOUT PEACE WITH RESPECT AND HONOR? CAN OBAMA WIN THE SOUTH? THE WHOLE SOUTH?

I AM SORRY THAT MY PARTY DIDN'T GO WITH JOE BIDEN FOR EXAMPLE. IF MRS CLINTON WAS FORWARD FROM THE GET GO, SHE MAY BE AHEAD.

I FEEL THAT IF OBAMA GET THE NOMINATION, THE SILENT MAJORITY WILL ONCE AGAIN COME OUT IN EVERY AREA AND VOTE MC'CAIN IN JUST AS THEY DID IN 68 WITH RICHARD NIXON. BLUE COLLARS, WHITE COLLARS, AND THOSE FED UP WITH PROTESTORS. IN SHORT, WE HAD THIS AND LET IT SLIP AWAY AGAIN! TOO BAD.

ROBERT JONES

PS.-- WHERE OR WHERE IS A FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT WHEN WE NEED HIM?

Robert, please explain in detail why you think Obama is unelectable, especially in light of the current economy. You bring up a great issue, though. What will the Obama-Clinton battle for the nomination do to the Democratic Party in the long-term? I'm trying to step back and look objectively at these calls for Clinton to drop out. I understand the purpose is for party unity. Perhaps those who urge her to drop out do so because they're worried that if the current division in the party is not healed quickly, McCain will win in November regardless of who the Democratic nominee is. Robert, your post suggests there are two factions within the Democratic Party: liberal and conservative. The way I see it, the Party has nominated liberals the past few elections, and most have lost. Maybe Hiram can set up the future of the Democratic Party and appeasing all its diverse voting blocs as a new topic to discuss.

For the sake of the party I hope it works things out with Hillary. She's worked so hard over the years (as Bill as too), and all those supporters of hers in Florida and Michigan are being left out of the process. If she does carry on through the convention, she's doing so in hopes of a resolution that would satisfy her. If not Hillary, perhaps someday Chelsea will become President.

Great, really great. The "Deputy Chief of Staff for Public Safety", appointed by Rod Blagojevich himself, is running for Congress. Looks like Morgenthaler hired Lisa Madigan's website designer. I agree with the Truck; the timeline is a little TMI.

With all due respect, Hiram, I think it's a stretch to blame Biggert, a lawyer educated at Stanford and Northwestern, for any of the bipartisan NCLB Act's shortcomings for the political purposes of pitching Harper as the better choice in the 13th district. As you know, the law is relatively new, dating to 2004, the year the liberal NYT extracted that juicy quote of Biggert's you cited above. Since then, progress has been made, particularly in DuPage County. Although you don't realize it because you cite a three-year-old blog post of yours. State government and the schools (board, administrators and teachers) need to be accountable, too. After all, per the 10th Amendment, states are free to set the achievement standards. I'll concede the NCLB Act could use some reform, but give it a chance, as even lead author Ted Kennedy himself stated last year that he remained committed to it.

As for the Iraq War, stop harping on her 2002 vote. Has anyone recorded Harper's position at the time? It's sooo easy to stump for votes proclaiming that one has opposed the war from the very beginning, yet was not privy to the information upon which to base a decision. Overall, violence in Iraq has decreased since the latest policy was put in place last year. And Biggert doesn't want our troops there any longer than what's absolutely necessary.

It's late; I'm tired. I won't debate SS or SCHIP with you at this time.

Hi Roy,

I agree that Congresswoman Biggert is no Jim Oberweis - but she does have the baggage of "No Child Left Behind" - a <a href="http://www.wurfwhile.com/blog/2005/03/10/no-child-left-behind-in-district-203-and-204-schools/" rel="nofollow">terrible law</a> she helped write that failed an in district school where she served as former school board president, is <a href="http://www.wurfwhile.com/blog/2004/07/31/no-child-left-behind-and-the-bill/" rel="nofollow">an unfunded mandate</a> (remember when Republicans hated them?) and threatens property values in Hinsdale - her response boiled down to "oops." Knowing our past history - here's the actual <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/05/education/05school.html?ex=1252036800&en=8942398bec6937ce&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland" rel="nofollow">quote from the NYT</a>:

"'I never expected to see all these suburban schools on the watch list,' said Ms. Biggert, who started her political career as president of the Hinsdale school board in the 1980's and helped write the federal law. She said she was astonished at the list of schools with excellent reputations in wealthy Chicago suburbs slapped with the low-performing label.

'I've been in all these schools and know how good they are and have concerns that so many schools of this caliber are getting labeled,' she said."

Congresswoman Biggert also has voted for the Iraq War (and the unending continuation of it), Social Security privatization (never smart - but given the current stock market it seems even less so), voted to deny expansion of SCHIP (children's health care) and has taken a number of other unpopular positions.

I also think you underestimate Obama's appeal. We'll see how he stacks up against John McCain, but I suspect he'll do extremely well.
